Mounting medical problems | Missy the Beagle Home | The end

A Happy DogMissy's last day

On Thursday Missy seemed to be in bad shape, hardly walking or eating. But on Friday she seemed almost back to normal, even jumping up and barking when someone rang the doorbell. On Saturday she was quiet, but still ate well, and was mobile.

Then on Sunday morning I woke up and it was clear she had taken a turn for the worse. She could barely move, and she wouldn't eat anything. Not even cheese. For a beagle, that's a sign that the time has come. I called my sister Gloria, who is a Certified Veterinary Technician. Gloria had agreed to administer the injection for Missy. She said she would be over late in the afternoon.

In the meantime, Judi and I took Missy to the beach. She seemed to enjoy the car ride (she loved car rides), and the beach was a new experience for her. (Three MPEG videos of Missy at the beach are available for downloading or viewing at the bottom of this page.) She explored some, although slowly.Exploring

PosingShe even found enough energy to pose!

It was an overcast day, and there was a strong onshore wind. The waves were high, and crashed violently on the beach. There were lots of smells for a beagle to smell! And the wind lifted Missy's ears away from her head.Flying Ears!

Missy pursued (slowly) a piece of blowing seaweed near the water. Then Judi took this picture of Missy and me as we watched the waves crash:

But before long Missy's energy gave out. She seemed happy, but tired. So I picked her up and carried her back to the car, and set her (with sandy feet) in the back seat. And we drove back to Judi's house.Looking Tired

These are three MPEG videos of Missy at the beach. They're about 1.5Mb each:
