A Beach Day
Miami Beach, March 2002

On the Beach

Wednesday was a beach day! We got out early (for us) and started soaking up the rays.

For lunch, we decided to ride our bicycles down the beach to see what we could find. The beach is very wide, and though the sand is soft near the water, it's packed hard (mostly <g>) near the dunes. We rode down the (mostly) hard packed part until we came to the end of the island -- about 2 miles. Then we wandered off to see what we could find.

What we found was an amazing restaurant: Big Pink. To begin with, the menu is large and varied. Large and varied in pretty much the same way that the Pope is Catholic. And then the food is great. And, finally, the portions are enormous. The menu warns that you will be served more than you can eat in one sitting, so be prepared for doggie bags, but Judi and I did not pay attention on this, our first visit. (Big mistake!)

The Mashed Potato Omelete really caught my eye, but we were trying to be good, so we ordered salads. Judi got an Argentian Steak Salad, and I ordered one topped with seared Tuna. Then, since we were being good, we felt we were entitled to Cheese Fries <g>.

The Cheese Fries were the best we've ever had (and we've had some Cheese Fries in our time). Whatever kind of cheese they used, it wasn't Pasturized Processed Cheese Food. It was great cheese. And then there was so much of it! Judi remarked that this was the first time we had Cheese Fries where there was more cheese than fries.

Then...

...our salads came.

MAN!!! These weren't salads intended to be consumed by mere humans! Well, maybe John Henry could have eaten mine, and Paul Bunyan Judi's. They were enormous! Judi's, in particular, was so huge it was served, not on a plate, but on an oval dinner platter. I would guess it was piled more than seven inches deep at the center.

And good! Oh, man, those salads were good. Judi's, especially, was tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette dressing that was so flavorful.

Regretfully, we had to leave a of food on our plates. It was just too much, and doggie bags were out of the question, since we had no refrigeration. But we tried to eat all the good stuff <g>.

If you would like to see the take-out menu from Big Pink (and salivate), you can click here. But be warned that it's six pages, and each page will take a while to download (about 300Kb apiece).

One especially unusual item on the Big Pink menu is the TV Dinner. You know what a TV Dinner is: A little plastic tray with compartments containing miniscule quantities of dry and tasteless food. Well, Big Pink's TV Dinners are pretty much the same, except...

  • The tray is made of stainless steel
  • The tray is enormous
  • The compartments are stuffed with more gourmet-quality food than a family of four can expect to eat at a single sitting
MAN!! Park me in front of a TV!
